Over 50% of Bulgarians Think Construction Industry Is Among Worst Hit by Inflation

A little over 50% of Bulgarians (51%) think that the construction industry is one of the worst affected by inflation and the rise in the prices of materials. Some 21% do not share this opinion, while 28% do not know, shows data from a survey by the Trend sociological agency, commissioned by the Bulgarian Construction Chamber, dedicated to public attitudes towards the construction sector, the agency said on Wednesday.

The research was conducted between August 15 and 22 through a direct semi-standardized face-to-face interview among 1,007 people over the age of 18.

Some 67% said that the state should update the old prices so that construction companies can complete public facilities. Only 8% did not share this opinion. The youngest respondents (18-29 years) consisted of the largest share of those who do not know what should be done in this situation.

Some 85 percent of Bulgarians said that they treat the construction profession with respect. Only 6% were of the opposite opinion. No particular dynamics in terms of demographic characteristics were taken into account.

A total of 38 percent of Bulgarians have heard that the lack of adequate indexation of contracts between the state and municipalities on the one hand, and construction companies on the other, will lead to unfinished projects and the return of European money. Some 46 percent have heard no information on the matter, the largest proportion of which consists of young people (18-29).

Some 44 percent of people have heard that in the absence of adequate indexation of contracts between the state and the municipalities, and construction companies, railway, water supply, road and many other projects may not be completed. For their part, 45% have not heard this information.

A total of 91 percent of people believe that the state should urgently solve the problem of road maintenance.

Some 80 percent of Bulgarians think that it is not permissible for the state to commission the construction of various sites and delay their payment. Only 8% disagree with this notion.
