Seven Bulgarian Heritage Sites to Benefit from State-Funded Archaeological Work

Jerusalem, 21 January, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Sofia (BTA) – Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers approved funding in the amount of €921,000 for the Ministry of Culture for 2026 for field archaeological research and field conservation of seven priority sites of national importance, the Ministry of Culture announced.

The priority sites are the First Bulgarian Capital Pliska, the Ancient Colony “Apolonia Pontica”, the Island of St. St. Cyril and Julia, the Medieval City of Kaliakra, the Medieval Bulgarian Capital Trapezitsa, the Ancient City “Nicopolis ad Istrum”, the Thracian Settlement near the Village of Vasil Levski, Karlovo Municipality, as well as the Ancient and Medieval City “Petrich Kale”, Avren Municipality, the Ministry of Culture indicates.

“The funding will ensure the continuation of systematic archaeological research, preservation and socialization of the sites, as well as the development of cultural tourism, science and the regional economy, and this will also contribute to the preservation of our national memory and cultural identity,” the team of the Ministry of Culture noted.
