Jerusalem, 12 December, 2019 (TPS) -- By: MIA
Macedonian students won silver and bronze medals at the 16th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), which took place in Doha, Qatar, December 3-12.
Elementary school student Nikola Spirovski from Skopje and high school student Majkl Georgievski from Kavadarci won silver medals in competition with 400 participants from 70 countries
Elementary school student Emilija Nikolovska from Ohrid, high school student Stefan Drmach from Skopje, and elementary school student Matej Gelev from Veles won bronze medals.
High school student Teona Kirovska from Sveti Nikole was also part of the team of six best science students in North Macedonia.
“This is by far the biggest success of a team from Macedonia in an international prestigious competition,” said professor Boce Mitrevski, who led the Macedonian team in Doha and is an IJSO coordinator and former president of the country’s Society of Physicists.
The students were trained and mentored at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, September to November 2019. In addition to Mitrevski, the team leaders included Marina Stojanovska and Lozenka Ivanova from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Mitrevski thanked all municipalities that provided support, the Fund for Innovation and Technology Development for the plane tickets provided, and the Youth and Sports Agency that provided support to three students in hope, he added, that they would change their rules on support for young talents.
“These students need access to laboratories, equipment, study materials and supplies, teachers who receive regular training, funds, plane tickets, quality preparations for international competitions. Simply, understanding, support and help,” Mitrevski said.
The 17th International Junior Science Olympiad will be held in Frankfurt, in 2020.
