Jerusalem, 17 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Tirana (ATA) – The Assembly approved today the resolution proposed by the Socialist Party on Tuesday formally declaring the Islamic Republic of Iran a state sponsor of terrorism and designates the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

In the plenary session where the Democratic Party MPs were absent, the chairman of the parliamentary group in the Socialist Party Taulant Balla invited the MPs to adopt a resolution that, according to him, “is related to the most important issues of international security and global order, the fight against terrorism and the responsibility of the states that support or tolerate it”.

According to him, the fight against terrorism is not simply a security issue, it is today a battle for the protection of democracy, for the protection of the rule of law and the preservation of international peace and stability.

“Albania has been and remains a very clear and unwavering country in its stance. We are a country that has clearly chosen the side of democracies, the side of the international order based on rules and the side of international cooperation against terrorism”, emphasized Balla.

The head of the ruling majority parliamentary group added that as a NATO-member and as a candidate country for EU membership, Albania has not only the right, but also the obligation to contribute to the collective security of the alliance and the international community.

“The resolution is part of this ongoing commitment, it is based on a reality that has been continuously documented by international analyses and reports of security institutions,” said Balla.

Balla added that for Albania this is not a distant geopolitical issue, our country has itself been the object of direct attacks in our cyberspace. The severe attack of 2022 on the institutions of the Republic of Albania was one of the most serious episodes of cyber aggression against a sovereign country.

Balla also said that, “Just a few days ago, the Albanian Parliament was again the target of a new cyber-attack. These are genuine hostile acts aimed at destabilizing democratic institutions and the normal functioning of the state”.

According to him, the resolution aims to clearly condemn any form of state support for terrorism.
