Armenia Says No Pollution Risk After Tehran Reports of ‘Acidic Rain’
Jerusalem, 10 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- (ARMENPRESS) – Meteorologists in Armenia have said that there is no risk of polluted air from Iran reaching Armenia, as air currents from that direction are not expected.
The statement by the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center of Armenia came after reports of blackened, oil-filled “acidic rain” in Tehran following multiple Israeli airstrikes targeting oil depots.
Residents reported a strange drizzle that many have begun calling “acid rain.”
CNN’s Frederik Pleitgen reported that “oil-filled rain” fell from the sky in Iran on Sunday following an Israeli strike.
Thick plumes of smoke billowed from the burning depots, spreading across the skyline.
Iran’s Red Crescent Society warned residents of Tehran and the surrounding region that the rainfall after the strikes could be “highly dangerous and acidic,” and could cause “chemical burns to the skin and serious damage to the lungs.”
The Armenian Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center said that it is monitoring atmospheric precipitation and that no changes have been detected.“
According to the study of the qualitative composition of atmospheric precipitation that fell on March 7–8, no changes were observed in the acidity or in the anionic and cationic composition of the precipitation,” the center reported.
At the same time, during March 9–11, Armenia will be under the influence of northeastern air currents, while on March 12–20, southwesterly currents, formed in the Mediterranean basin, will mainly prevail across the republic.
“The analysis of atmospheric processes shows that in the coming days the penetration of air currents from the territory of Iran into the Republic of Armenia is not forecast. The intrusion of southern cyclones into Armenia is mainly observed from the regions of Iraq, rather than from Iran, and the penetration of such cyclones into our region occurs very rarely.
It should also be noted that during the next 10 days, a west-to-east movement of air currents is observed over Iran’s territory, meaning that air masses are moving from Iran toward Turkmenistan,” the statement issued by the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center says.
It is emphasized that the monitoring center is carrying out continuous observation of atmospheric conditions, and the public will be informed immediately in case of any changes.
