Azerbaijan Bans Marriage Between Relatives
Jerusalem, 30 June, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Baku (BTA) – To protect the health of future generations and prevent congenital diseases in Azerbaijan, the circle of relatives between whom marriage is not allowed is being expanded from July 1.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Justice, according to the amendment to Article 12 of the Family Code, marriage between uncles and nieces, and aunts and nephews, and cousins who have a common biological grandparent will not be allowed.
The presence of kinship between the persons wishing to enter into marriage will be verified through the information system of the Ministry of Justice by an official of the registry office, consular office, or executive branch.
If this information cannot be obtained through the system, copies of the birth certificates of the persons wishing to marry and their parents must be attached to the marriage application. If these documents cannot be obtained, additional documents may be required to determine whether there is a kinship relationship.
If the above-mentioned relationship is determined as a result of the verification, the marriage of those persons will not be registered by the registration authority.
