Azerbaijan Moves to Restore Landmark Round Tower Fortress in Lankaran
Jerusalem, 27 April, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Baku (AZERTAC) – Restoration work has begun on the Round Castle (Dungeon), an architectural monument in Lankaran. The restoration work, ordered by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Culture, will be carried out under the supervision of the State Service for the Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture.
The Round Tower is a historic defensive structure located in the city of Lankaran in southeastern Azerbaijan, near the Caspian Sea. It was built in the 18th or early 19th century as part of the city’s fortifications and is one of the few surviving elements of the former Lankaran fortress complex.
The State Service told AZERTAC that the purpose of the restoration work is to preserve the historical appearance of the monument, ensure its structural stability, and create appropriate infrastructure for the comfort of visitors. Within the framework of the project, the roof of the castle will be restored, stones that have become unusable as a result of natural influences will be replaced with materials that match the original, and the joints between the masonry will be filled with a special solution. At the same time, protective solutions will be applied to increase the durability of the building against wear and moisture, and landscaping and infrastructure work will be carried out in the area.
Once the restoration work is complete, the castle will be reopened to visitors.
Several years ago, as a result of the collapse of the roof of the Round Tower, the monument fell into a state of emergency. Subsequently, design and estimate documents for the restoration were prepared, coordinated with relevant state agencies, and a positive expert opinion was received.
