Jerusalem, 16 November, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Sofia (BTA) – In 2024, 478 people were killed and 9,054 injured in 7,173 serious traffic accidents in Bulgaria, the National Center of Public Health and Analyses (NCPHA) reported on its website on Thursday. Every year, Bulgaria joins the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which is observed every third Sunday in November, which in 2025 falls on November 16.

The NCPHA wrote: “The consequences of serious road accidents worldwide are immeasurable when it comes to human life. Each such loss changes destinies, and the consequences are irreparable not only for the relatives of the victims but also for society as a whole. Of all causes of death worldwide, road accidents remain the leading cause of premature death among children and young people, and this trend is persistent and alarming.”

According to data from the Ministry of Interior published on Saturday, since the beginning of November there have been 237 accidents with 21 fatalities and 299 injured people. Since the start of the year, there have been 5,869 road accidents with 394 fatalities and 7,310 injured.

The Road Safety Report for 2024 shows that despite strategic efforts and some positive trends, road traffic injuries in the country remain at an unacceptably high level, the State Agency Road Safety reported on August 1, 2025. Poor enforcement of measures and insufficient commitment to prevention by institutions are the main reasons for this.

Car traffic continues to grow, with a 14.4% increase in mileage compared to 2019, which increases pressure on the road system and the risk of accidents. Although the number of fatalities has decreased by 9% compared to 2023 and by 23.9% compared to 2019, there has been an increase in serious accidents with casualties and severe injuries.
