Bulgaria Wins 10 Medals in Debut at World Beach Tennis Championship
Jerusalem, 1 July, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Shumen (BTA) – Ten medals, four of which were gold, were won for Bulgaria in its first participation in the Beach Tennis World Championship by Beach Tennis Burgas. More than 300 competitors from 20 countries took part in the thirtieth anniversary edition of the championship, which took place in the Italian city of Rimini. This was reported to BTA by Dobril Savov from the Burgas club.
“Together with my club partner Denislav Dachev, we became world champions of the championship in the “plus 30 years” category, and with my partner Natalia Kazankina from the Czech Republic, who is a member of our club and has been training hard for only about a year, we won another title – in the mixed doubles. This is the first participation of competitors from our club in the world beach tennis championship and for the first time we are winning championship titles for Bulgaria,” noted Savov, who was born in Shumen and has lived in Burgas for years.
“We also won seven bronze medals at the championship. The most valuable one for me is the one from the “pro forma”. In the competition of some of the best beach tennis players in the world, we lost in the semifinals to competitors from Brazil, who then won the title. In the general opinion of the audience, under its stormy applause, this was one of the best and most contested matches of the tournament, worthy of a final,” Savov also commented.
According to Savov, the performance of the five players from the Burgas club was more than successful in their debut at the World Beach Tennis Championship. The most numerous were the representatives of Brazil, Poland, Hungary and the host Italy.
“We are happy that in our debut, with only five players from the club, we achieved such significant successes. We set out to perform with dignity, but we exceeded our goals. We understood that with hard training we can play with dignity with top tennis players from all over the world and we waved the Bulgarian national flag at the championship many times, even though there were only five of us. Unfortunately, Anton Toromanov, who was playing together with Marin Dimov, was injured on the first day, made an effort, gritted his teeth, the two of them played their matches and were close to medals,” said the two-time world beach tennis champion.
There were other Bulgarian competitors at the world championship. Beach tennis in Bulgaria developed in Varna, Burgas, Sofia, Ruse and Dobrich. A beach tennis competition is coming up in Burgas on July 5 and 6.
“We will welcome competitors from Bulgaria and abroad to the nine courts of the club, located in the city’s Sea Garden, which we managed to build over the last two years. I hope more people will get excited about beach tennis, which combines skills from tennis, volleyball and other sports, in order to raise the class of Bulgarian competitors and build on the results achieved,” added Savov.
