Bulgarian President Rumen Radev held a videoconference call with European Council President Charles Michel on Monday, in the framework of the preparations for the European leaders’ meeting in Prague, where the first summit in the format of the European Political Community and an informal meeting of the European Council will take place on October 6 and 7, respectively, Radev’s press service said Monday.

Radev welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s initiative to create a European Political Community – a new political grouping that would include the EU countries, the European Free Trade Association countries, the Balkans, and other nearby states including the United Kingdom. In Radev’s words, the new platform has the potential to facilitate dialogue and create opportunities for more effective coordination of efforts to achieve stability, security and prosperity both within the EU and with neighboring countries.

The need to strengthen security and predictability in the supply of energy resources to Europe, contributing to economic and social stability in individual countries, was among the highlights of the talks. Radev briefed Michel on the agreement between gas transmission operators of Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia to transport additional quantities of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe using national gas transmission networks without waiting for the construction of new infrastructure. This, in Radev’s words, demonstrates the ability to reach real solutions that will guarantee Europe’s competitiveness and industrial capacity.
