Bulgarians Increase Their Tourism by 15% Y/Y in Q2 2022

In the second quarter of 2022, 1,076,600 Bulgarian residents traveled for tourism and vacations, both abroad and to destinations at home. This is according to preliminary data from the National Statistical Institute published on Wednesday.

The majority – 80.0% – traveled only within the country and just 15.7% of all Bulgarian travelers went abroad. 4.3% of the travelers traveled to both domestic destinations as well as foreign ones. Compared to the same quarter of 2021, the total number of travelers aged 15 and over increased by 15.5%.

In the second quarter of 2022, most Bulgarian citizens who traveled were aged 25-44 years – 477,400, or 44.3% of all travelers.

The share of trips within Bulgaria dominated in all age groups, the highest (82.4%) being the share among persons aged 15-24. The share of residents aged 15-24 who travelled abroad was 17.6% of the total travelers in this group and the highest compared to the other age groups.

The majority of tourist trips made by persons aged 15 and over within the country (45.7%) and abroad (76.4%) were for “holiday and recreation” purposes.

In the second quarter of 2022, 1,390,400, or 88.8% of the total number of private tourist trips, were registered as independent. The relative share of independent trips without booking was 93.8% in the country and 60.3% abroad.

As far as expenditure, expenses on food* had the highest relative share on domestic trips – 38.6%, whereas on trips abroad it was on transport – 31.4%

In the second quarter of 2022, a person aged 15 and over spent BGN 200.27 on average for a private trip in the country and BGN 738.51 abroad.

At the same time, the average expenditure per person on a business trip was BGN 195.64 in the country and BGN 1,078.78 abroad.
