Bulgaria’s Kozloduy Nuclear Plant Maintains Output Despite Record-Low Danube Levels

Jerusalem, 3 August, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Kozloduy (BTA) – The two power units of Bulgaria’s Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant continue to operate at the planned load despite the record low levels of the Danube River, the Ministry of Energy announced.

As of 5:00 p.m. on August 2, the two units of the plant were producing electricity according to the approved schedule. The ministry noted that the low level of the Danube has already led to the shutdown of the Hungarian Paks NPP and is creating difficulties for nuclear power plants in other countries as well.

According to the department’s assessment, if the average rate of decline in the river level observed over the past week is maintained, it is not expected that a significant reduction in the production capacity of the Kozloduy NPP will be necessary for at least the next three weeks.

The Ministry of Energy states that it has taken the necessary actions to promptly inform Bulgarian institutions and to ensure international cooperation within the framework of the agreements for the management and use of the waters of the Danube River. Constant contact at the highest level is maintained with the authorities in Serbia and Romania.

The department adds that they are in constant coordination with the Kozloduy NPP, the National Electricity Company and the Electricity System Operator to guarantee the security and reliable functioning of the electricity system.

At the end of the working week, the Kozloduy NPP introduced measures due to the record low level of the Danube.
