Cecilia Sala Released, Other Cases of Women Detained in Iran’s Evin Prison
Jerusalem, 8 January, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- (Adnkronos) – Cecilia Sala has been released. The case of the journalist, with her arrest in Iran on December 19th on charges of “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic,” mobilized public attention, in Italy and abroad.
It recalled the situation of Alessia Piperno, a traveler blogger arrested in Teheran on September 28, 2022 and released on November 10 of the same year. She was locked up in the terrifying Evin prison, like Cecilia Sala , and during her detention a fire broke out in the prison, probably triggered by a riot, which caused the death of several inmates.
Much longer than the detention period in Iran served by Kylie Moore-Gilbert , a researcher with Australian and British citizenship, who spent 804 days behind bars in the Islamic Republic, arrested in September 2018, accused of espionage and freed in November 2020 in exchange for the release of three Iranians detained in Thailand. The release of Kylie Moore-Gilbert helped raise hopes for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
Also detained in Evin, with a British and Iranian passport, she was arrested in 2016 on charges of espionage, which she has always strongly denied. Zaghari-Ratcliffe remained in prison for six years, released only in March 2022. Anoosheh Ashoori, also a dual citizen, detained since 2017, was also released with her.
