Central Sofia Synagogue Launches Exhibition of Religious Artifacts
Jerusalem, 16 February, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Sofia (BTA) – The museum exhibition “The Niche” in the Central Sofia Synagogue opened its doors on Sunday, reports the organization of Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom.”
The exhibition presents selected religious objects, and an audio guide provides explanations about the construction and history of the synagogue, the team specifies.
“The “niche” is exactly where it should be – among the people. Because our history is not an archive. It is a living tissue. It breathes with us, grows with us and reminds us of our responsibility. Every people has its testimonies of the path it has taken. Sometimes these testimonies are books, sometimes – ritual objects, photographs, notes, names, voices. And behind them there are always people. Families. Faith and choices made in difficult times. When we preserve these objects, we actually preserve the memory of those who came before us. And when we place them here – at the center of our spiritual life, we declare that the past is not a finished chapter, but a foundation,” said the chairman of OEB “Shalom” Dr. Alina Levi.
The host of the event, Maxim Delchev, chairman of the Central Israelite Spiritual Council, thanked his colleagues – direct participants in the process, the director of the Sofia Synagogue Yulia Gavazova, the deputy chairman of the Central Israelite Spiritual Council Stella Behar, Ivanka Gezenko – historian, archivist and long-time expert at the State Archives Agency, and author, together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teodor Liho, of the museum exhibition.
