Czech Weapons Amnesty Yields Nearly 800 Firearms in First Month
Jerusalem, 4 February, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Prague (CTK) – During the month of the weapons amnesty, the police took over 787 weapons, 20,000 pieces of ammunition, 144 pieces of ammunition and 53 grams of explosives from people in the Czech Republic. According to the police’s interim data published on the X network, the apparent leader in the number of weapons surrendered is still Central Bohemia. People can surrender illegally held weapons, ammunition, ammunition and explosives without explanation and without penalty until the end of June.
According to the police, interesting weapons have also appeared among the items handed over so far. They mentioned, among others, a German VG-45 rifle , which is worth around one million crowns and there are probably only two in the Czech Republic, a German-made Erma EMP submachine gun, or a French submachine gun from the post-war period from the manufacturer Hotchkiss.
At the same time, police officers warned that people often bring ammunition and explosives directly to the police department, which is dangerous. “Just the handling and transportation itself can initiate them. If you find such an object, call 158. The bomb disposal experts will deal with it,” they emphasized.
The surrendered weapons and ammunition will be examined by experts. They will verify whether the weapons were used to commit a crime. If the connection is not proven and the weapon is not in the search, a person can apply for the issuance of the necessary documents that authorize him to possess a weapon within six months. “It applies that a weapon can only be issued to someone who meets all the conditions set by law and has the appropriate weapons license,” the police said earlier.
A gun amnesty was declared in the Czech Republic five times before this year, with the last one in 2021, when people surrendered or registered almost 3,700 weapons and 133,000 pieces of ammunition.
