The European Parliament will be marking Wednesday evening the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews. MEP Andrey Kovachev told BTA that the idea of the event is to make sure the story of Bulgarian Jews reaches as many MEPs as possible and as many people as possible.

The program includes speeches by historian Michael Bar-Zohar, the Director of the Transatlantic Institute of the American Jewish Committee Daniel Schwammenthal, the Ambassadors to the EU of Bulgaria, Rumen Alexandrov, and of Israel, Haim Regev, MEPs Asim Ademov and Alexander Yordanov.

“The 80th anniversary of the salvation of Bulgarian Jews is an important event and a reason to be proud. Not only did our ancestors give a ray of hope during the darkest years of the Holocaust, but they also saved, besides the Bulgarian Jews, more than 15,000 Jews from all over Europe,” he said. He explained that Bulgaria provided those who tried to reach what was then Palestine under the British mandate with transit visas behind the Nazis’ backs.
