European Parliament to Debate again Bulgaria’s, Romania’s Schengen Accession

Next week the European Parliament will debate yet again the Schengen accession of Bulgaria and Romania, Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats President Iratxe Garcia Perez, who initiated the debate, said here on Thursday.

In her words, it is unfair that Schengen border controls have not yet been lifted for citizens of the two countries. Garcia Perez noted that Bulgaria and Romania have been meeting the Schengen requirements for 11 years now.

Since the two countries have been declared ready, the European Parliament has adopted at least three resolutions calling for their admission to Schengen. The issue requires a unanimous decision by the EU Council.
