Eurostat: Unemployment in Bulgaria 4.6% in July, 6% in EU

The unemployment rate in Bulgaria in July was 4.6%, up by 0.1% from June and down by 0.5% year-on-year. The statistics represent about 150,000 unemployed Bulgarians in July, 147,000 in June and 165,000 in July 2021. The European Union’s unemployment rate was 6% in July, down slightly from 6.1% in June, and 0.9% down year-on-year, according to the latest seasonally adjusted data from the European statistics agency Eurostat, published on Thursday.

Spain (12.6%), Greece (11.4%) and Cyprus (8%) had the highest unemployment rates in July among EU member states. At the other end of the scale among the countries with the lowest unemployment rates are the Czech Republic (2.3%), Poland (2.6%) and the third place is shared by Malta and Germany (2.9% cent each).

In July, unemployment among euro area countries was 6.6%. In June, the figure was 6.7%, while in July 2021 it reached 7.7%.

Unemployment among young people under 25 in Bulgaria is 13.1%, which corresponds to about 17,000 people – the highest number since February. In June, the rate was 12%, while in July 2021 it was 16.1%. The EU youth unemployment rate in July was 14% and 14.2% in the euro area. In the previous month, the rates were 14.2% and 14.4%, respectively.

The unemployment rate in Bulgaria by gender showed that unemployed men accounted for 4.9% of the labor force in July, while unemployed women accounted for 4.3%. In July 2022, the EU female unemployment rate was 6.4%, maintaining its value from the previous month. Male unemployment was 5.7%, also unchanged from June’s level. In the euro area, the female unemployment rate fell by 0.1% to 7% in July, while the male rate remained unchanged at 6.3%.
