Fifth Balkan Summer School Focuses on Bulgarian Jews Rescue’s 80th Anniversary

Jerusalem, 29 August, 2023 (TPS) -- PLOVDIV, SOUTH-CENTRAL BULGARIA, (BTA)
The Fifth Balkan Summer School of Religions and Public Life is entitled “Between Memory and Forgetting” and is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews.

The school will take place between September 1 and 10 at the Paissii Hilendarski Plovdiv University“.

Attending will be participants and lecturers from Bulgaria, Germany, Israel, the US, Indonesia, Zimbabwe and Iran. Participating will be Prof. Adam Seligman, honorary doctor of the Plovdiv University, researcher of the Holocaust and the modern condition of Judaism and anti-Semitism, Prof. Daniel Blatman from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Prof. Nadege Ragaru, author of a book about the rescue of Bulgarian Jews, published in 2022, Prof. Albena Taneva of the Sofia University, expert on the problems of civil society and the Bulgarian history of the 20th century, Sinai Peter, director of the theater in Haifa, scientists and experts.
During the summer school features and documentaries depicting events from before 80 years will be screened. Among the highlights will be meetings with descendants of rescued Bulgarian Jews in 1943.
