Former Moldovan Intelligence Chief Held in Romania on Treason Charges
Jerusalem, 11 September, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Bucharest (Agerpres) – The Bucharest Court of Appeal on Wednesday ordered the remand in custody of Alexandru Balan, former the Moldovan Security and Intelligence Service (SIS), for 30 days. He is accused of treason and passing classified intel to the Belarusian KGB.
Alexandru Balan, 47, holding dual Moldovan and Romanian citizenship, was taken into custody by prosecutors with the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) in Timisoara on Monday and transported to Bucharest to provide explanations to investigators.
DIICOT announced that evidence indicates the suspect, a former senior official of Moldova’s Information and Security Service, has been involved since 2024 in the unauthorized disclosure of state secrets to Belarusian KGB officers, in ways that could endanger Romania’s national security. Between 2024 and 2025, he allegedly held two meetings in Budapest with Belarusian intelligence officers, suspected to involve the transmission of instructions and payments.
The investigation, carried out under EUROJUST, was supported by intelligence services from Romania, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, as well as prosecutors from these countries and the Republic of Moldova.
