Jerusalem, 7 January, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Sofia (BTA) – Over 840,000 flowers, including the selected variety of tulips “Serdika”, were planted by the Sofia Municipality in 2025, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev announced in a post on the social network Facebook.

“Over the past two years, together with regional administrations, active citizens and responsible business partners, we have planted tens of thousands of trees in Sofia under various municipal and joint projects. These are not sporadic campaigns, but systematic work – neighborhood by neighborhood,” Terziev said.

He noted that in 2025, the Municipality continued planting vegetation on streets and boulevards, in parks and gardens, between blocks of flats and in suburban areas.

The municipality has planted over 3,400 new trees and nearly 60,000 shrubs.

In the spring of 2025, another edition of the “New Forest of Sofia” initiative took place in Busmantsi, Iskar district. Since 2023, over 13,000 sycamore saplings have already been planted there.

The Sofia Municipality is betting on sustainable species suitable for urban environments, planting larger saplings with a higher chance of taking root, and ensuring regular maintenance. In the hottest months, new trees are watered more frequently, and in hard-to-reach places, gradual irrigation systems are used, which provide water exactly when it is needed most, the publication states.

The mayor assures that the municipality’s efforts to improve the green system will continue this year. “A green Sofia is not created all at once. It is built with perseverance, with reasonable decisions and with joint efforts – of the institutions and the people who live in this city,” Terziev said.
