Green Vision for Baku: Central Park Expansion Leads City’s Urban Renewal
Jerusalem, 4 August, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Baku (AZERTAC) – In recent years, one of the main priorities in the development of large cities around the world has been to preserve the ecological balance of the environment and increase public green spaces. This trend remains especially relevant in cities with dense populations and rapid urbanization.
The capital Baku has also joined this global trend and has been implementing important projects in recent years to transform the urban environment. A large-scale planning process is being carried out to make the city more functional, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive while preserving the historical silhouette, architectural heritage and cultural landscape of the capital. In this regard, the “Master Plan for the Development of Baku City until 2040” plays the role of the main roadmap for shaping the Baku of the future.
One of the main priorities of the Master Plan is the expansion of green and public spaces in the city center, as well as the protection of historical sites and urban heritage. The Central Park expansion project, implemented with this approach, acts as a valuable initiative not only from an aesthetic and functional point of view, but also from a social and ecological point of view. The Central Park is not just a green area, but a new breath of fresh air for modern Baku. It is a strategic project aimed at rebuilding the relationship between man and the city, improving the quality of life of local residents and developing the architectural identity of the capital in harmony with modern urbanization. This place, where green space and public life intersect, is becoming a shining example of Baku’s future vision. The expansion of the park is a multifaceted initiative that not only increases the green space, but also integrates it into the social, architectural and ecological environment of the city.
AZERTAC presents its research on the expansion of Central Park, one of the leading projects aimed at the ecological and urban development of Baku.
The idea of creating a Central Park arose from the need to create a functional, ecologically and socially beneficial public space in the city center. This initiative aims not only to improve the environment, but also to modernize the architectural image of the capital and provide residents with a better urban environment. The opening of the first part of the park took place in May 2019. At this stage, the former “Soviet” area, which was backward in terms of infrastructure, was demolished, and a large park space that meets modern requirements was created in its place. The first stage was met with great enthusiasm by the city population, as it was the first time that such a large public recreation area had been formed in this zone. Here, walking paths, benches, fountains and modern landscape design created a new standard in park culture.
In 2022 and 2024, respectively, the second and third parts of the park were put into use by residents. During this period, the functionality of the park was expanded. The park now serves not only as a place for walking and relaxation, but also as a place for various public events and family entertainment. Bicycle paths, outdoor sports areas, children’s playgrounds, and quiet recreation areas were added. Transport and pedestrian traffic around the park area was also optimized. More trees were also planted, decorative plant strips were created, and the number of water elements was increased.
The fourth stage, which is currently being implemented, is considered the most comprehensive. Approximately 21 hectares of land located around the “Nizami” metro station will be combined with the previous 36 hectares parts of the park to form a single urban green belt. It is also planned to create a large artificial lake in the park. Functionally, the fourth part of the park will include recreation, lakeside recreation, sports, cultural event zones, and children’s playgrounds.
It is planned to reconstruct the existing historical buildings in the area, enrich them with new functions, and integrate them into the park. In order to optimize the flow of traffic, it is planned to organize a closed parking lot in the park.
At the same time, the historical quarter around the “Taza Pir” mosque and in the area designated as a social and business zone by the Master Plan is planned to be improved and reconstructed in accordance with modern standards in order to integrate it into the environment and the new urban structure as a unique urban planning and architectural example of Baku.
