Day 2 of War: Israeli Air Superiority Over Tehran, Three Killed in Iranian Barrages
Jerusalem, 14 June, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Israel remained on high alert on Saturday night after a second day of intense fighting with Iran, including the first Israeli casualties in missile attacks.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that over 200 ballistic missiles were launched from Iran toward Israel late Friday and early Saturday, triggering sirens nationwide and forcing millions into bomb shelters. Most of the missiles were intercepted by Israel’s multilayered air defense systems, but several struck residential areas in central Israel the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.
Magen David Adom emergency responded reported around 70 injuries, including several people in critical condition. Three of those wounded later died from their injuries. They were identified as Etti Cohen Engel, a woman in her 60s from Ramat Gan; 73-year-old Yisrael Aloni of Rishon LeZion; the third fatality was Yevgenia Blinder, 74, who was also killed in Rishon LeZion.
Most of the other casualties suffered light to moderate injuries or were treated for anxiety.
According to the IDF, about 25 percent of the missiles were intentionally not intercepted in line with defense protocol, as they were projected to fall in open areas. However, a “small number” of projectiles managed to breach Israeli defenses and hit urban zones, including Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Rishon LeZion, damaging buildings and vehicles.
Responding forcefully, Israel has carried out continuous airstrikes on Iranian territory for more than 40 hours. In a press conference, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said the Israeli Air Force struck over 150 targets, including key components of Iran’s military-industrial infrastructure.
“At this hour, air force pilots are continuing to strike and carry out significant blows in various areas in Iran,” Defrin said. “Tehran is no longer immune.”
He also confirmed that Israeli aircraft have achieved air superiority over western Iran and Tehran, following overnight strikes on Iranian air defenses. “Hundreds of Israeli jets and aircraft are currently holding air superiority,” he said. “The aircraft are completing a wave of strikes on strategic military industry targets, nuclear program targets, and senior officials in the Iranian terror leadership.”
Among the high-profile targets was a heavily fortified underground weapons complex in western Iran, which Israel says was used to store and launch ballistic and cruise missiles. “The site had previously been revealed in a propaganda video released by the Iranian regime,” the IDF noted. That video featured Armed Forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri and the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ Aerospace Force, Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh — both of whom were killed in Israeli strikes on Friday.
Back in Israel, the IDF Home Front Command extended emergency restrictions. All public gatherings remain banned, and schools and non-essential workplaces are closed until further notice. The Education Ministry announced that students nationwide would transition to distance learning starting Sunday and graduation exams will also be postponed by a week.
Israel’s Ministry of Energy ordered the temporary shutdown of two of its three offshore gas fields as a precaution.
Oman, which has mediating indirect US-Iranian negotiations announced that the sixth round of negotiations scheduled for Sunday would not take place.
Israel launched preemptive strikes against Iranian nuclear sites early Friday, citing intelligence that Tehran had reached “a point of no return” in its pursuit of nuclear weapons. According to Israeli defense officials, Iran has developed the capacity to rapidly enrich uranium and assemble nuclear bombs, with sufficient fissile material for up to 15 weapons.
Israeli intelligence also exposed a covert program to complete all components of a nuclear device. The strikes mark a dramatic escalation in what officials describe as a broader Iranian strategy combining nuclear development, missile proliferation, and proxy warfare aimed at Israel’s destruction.
