Israel Confirms Continuining Raids on Syrian Army Infrastructure

Jerusalem, 9 January, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- The Israel Defense Forces confirmed it was continuing to destroy weapons and infrastructure belonging to the Syrian army on Thursday.

“All findings were destroyed and confiscated to prevent them from reaching hostile elements, and harming IDF forces and the citizens of the Golan Heights,” the IDF said.

The army said it located and destroyed numerous weapons and infrastructure belonging to the Syrian army “in order to provide security and defense to the residents of Israel and the residents of the Golan Heights in particular.”

According to the IDF, armored engineering and infantry forces were conducting searches at “locations and control points.”

During searches at one of the outposts in the area, the forces located an armored personnel carrier with numerous weapons, anti-tank missiles and explosive devices, the IDF said.

Israeli forces have already destroyed weapons found in the demilitarized zone.

Israel sent forces into the 235 sq km buffer zone to prevent Syrian rebels from approaching the border when the regime of Bashar Assad collapsed in December.

The move into the demilitarized zone was coordinated with peacekeepers from the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

Israeli officials say they will remain in the demilitarized zone for as long as necessary.

While Israeli forces have briefly entered the buffer zone in the past, December’s takeover marked the first time since its establishment that the IDF set up positions there. The demilitarized zone was established with a ceasefire in 1974 that ended the Yom Kippur War.

Israel considers the 1974 ceasefire agreement void until order is restored in Syria.
