Israel Striking Weapons Depots Across Southern Syria, Damascus
Jerusalem, 8 December, 2024 (TPS-IL) -- Syrian media reported continuing Israeli airstrikes around southern Syria and Damascus. Israeli media reports suggest the strikes are targeting Syrian and Iranian weapons stockpiles to prevent them from being seized by Islamist rebels.
Initial reports indicate the strikes are particularly targeting the Mezzeh and Khalkhalah military airports in the Damascus area, which were used by the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corops and Hezbollah, and other strategic sites.
Strikes on other targets in the southern Syrian provinces of Quneitra and Daraa, and the Damascus area have also been reported.
According to Syria’s opposition radio station, Voice of the Capital, “Israel is systematically destroying all the brigades and battalions of the previous regime in southern Syria, while directly attacking all air defense systems, missile depots and development and production institutes,” as well as other sites involved with producing weapons that could threaten Israel.
The fallout from Israel’s war with Hamas and Hezbollah triggered a domino effect that led to Syrian rebels — including the Al Qaida-linked Tahrir al-Sham and Turkish-backed Islamists — to topple Bashar Assad’s regime.
