Israeli Ambassador to Bulgaria Yoram Elron visited the restored synagogue in the Danubian town of Vidin on Thursday. He viewed the renovated appearance of the place and met with members of the local Jewish community.

Built in 1894, the Vidin synagogue is the second-largest in Bulgaria after the one in the capital Sofia, according to a description on the municipal administration’s website. In 1967, it was declared a landmark of national significance.

Ambassador Elron told BTA that when he visited the Vidin synagogue three years ago, he was very depressed by the way it looked. And now, he is impressed to see how well its authentic appearance has been restored.

“This is perhaps my last official trip in Bulgaria as Ambassador of the State of Israel, and it has deep symbolic meaning. I have no doubt that the synagogue will become a tourist attraction for Jews from around the world,” Elron said.
