Last Group of Participants in 33rd National Antarctic Expedition Returns

The last group of participants in the 33rd National Antarctic Expedition returned to Sofia on Tuesday, on a flight from Rome, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute said.

The group includes the Deputy Director of the National Centre for Polar Studies at Sofia University, Dragomir Mateev, commander of the Bulgarian polar base during the expedition Kamen Nedkov, electrical engineer Petar Sapundzhiev, field assistant and boat driver Elka Vassileva, mechanic Vladimir Gigov, and logistician Miroslav Kunev.

During the expedition, the new laboratory building was completed and officially opened and research was carried out on numerous scientific projects, some of them international, with the participation of scientists from Romania, Montenegro, Abu Dhabi, Greece, Colombia, and Portugal.

The expedition will end on April 11 with the return of the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii, which is currently near the Strait of Gibraltar.
