Ministry of Tourism Reports Significant Interest in Spa Tourism in Bulgaria in 2022

In 2022, there was significant interest in spa tourism in Bulgaria. According to summarized data from the Integrated Tourism Information System, more than 13% of tourist registrations in Bulgaria were in the municipalities of Velingrad, Hisarya, Sandanski, Razlog, Pavel Banya, Sapareva Banya, Garmen, Devin, Kyustendil, Varshets, Mineralni Bani, Strelcha, Kostenets, Dolna Banya, Banite.

The real share of spa tourism is much higher, as spa is also offered in the main sea and mountain resorts, as well as in many other destinations in the interior of the country, where different forms of tourism can be practiced and successfully combined, the Tourism Ministry said on its website.

In most of the listed municipalities, the share of Bulgarian tourists exceeded 90%. The total number of foreign tourists for the listed municipalities was over 70,000. Most foreign tourists were from the Republic of North Macedonia, Israel, Romania, Greece, Germany, Great Britain, Serbia, etc.

There was interest in spa tourism among all age groups. Younger tourists usually associated it with recreation and relaxation, and older tourists often travelled to improve their health. According to aggregated data from the 15 municipalities, the highest share of tourists (32%) was between 45 and 59 years old.
