Jerusalem, 23 November, 2020 (TPS) -- Skopje, 22 November 2020 (MIA) – The day when the Albanian alphabet was standardized is considered one of the key events in the history of the Albanians and in our joint history, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said on Sunday.

After being standardized at an academic conference in 1908 in Bitola, he added, the Albanian language becomes equal in the family of modern European alphabets and part of the versatile wealth of the world cultural heritage.

“Language and its alphabet are part of the genetic code of a nation stemming from the universal right of self-determination. This genetic code includes the elements of identity and the potentials for communication, social integration, education and development. It is our duty, the duty of the state, to respect, nourish and foster the diversity of the language and alphabet of its communities. We are motivated by the European values, which we have adopted as our own on our path to join the EU,” Zaev said in a Alphabet Day greeting.

By marking Albanian Alphabet Day, the PM noted, we uphold the joint commitment to honoring and improving ethnic and cultural diversity, which is the treasure of the Republic of North Macedonia.

“We are building one society for all, a civil society where ethnic, national, religious and cultural diversity is nourished. We are proud to consider ethnic and linguistic diversity as our advantage,” PM Zaev said in his greeting.
