Politicians Want Progress, Macedonian Historians Trying to Block It, Says Bulgarian Historian Dimitrov

Jerusalem, 2 December, 2020 (TPS) -- Sofia, 2 December 2020 (MIA) – Angel Dimitrov, head of the Bulgarian team in the North Macedonia-Bulgaria expert committee on historical issues, stressed to Bulgarian TV broadcaster BNT worry in anticipation of the upcoming committee session, scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

“We always wanted to meet more often, but that didn’t happen. Next year, the committee is scheduled to hold only five meetings, which is not enough,” noted Dimitrov, who is also a former Bulgarian Ambassador to North Macedonia.

According to him, politicians and historians have different interests.

“Politicians in both countries want to progress, but Macedonian historians are doing everything in their power to block it,” Dimitrov added.

He stressed that this approach delays the possibility of dispute resolution in the near future.

“It all comes down to political will, but historians also play a role. They have a responsibility, to tell the truth, and prepare society to hear it,” Dimitrov underlined.

He added that all political stakeholders in Bulgaria share the same position regarding North Macedonia.

“The government, Parliament, all political parties, as well as the President all share the same position,” Dimitrov concluded.
