Romania to Mark Day of Solidarity and Friendship with Israel in Joint Parliamentary Session

Jerusalem, 13 May, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Bucharest (Agerpres) – Romania’s Parliament will hold on May 20 a joint solemn session to mark the Day of Solidarity and Friendship between Romania and the State of Israel, provides an internal Memorandum approved on Monday by the joint Standing Bureaus of the two Houses of Parliament.

“Against the backdrop of the privileged Romanian-Israeli relations, Law No. 86/2024 created May 14 as the Day of Solidarity and Friendship between Romania and the State of Israel. This regulatory act supports the course of the special partnership between the two countries, built on shared values, respect and deep interhuman ties. At the same time, the 77 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations prove the solidity of the Romanian-Israeli friendship and open new perspectives for developing an as close cooperation as possible in the future,” the approved document states.

According to the program proposed, the solemn session will begin with the national anthems of Israel and Romania, and speeches will be given by Senate interim President Mircea Abrudean, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Ciprian Serban, caretaker Prime Minister Catalin Predoiu, and the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, deputy Silviu Vexler.

Each parliamentary group will have a five-minute time slot for interventions during the joint session, while the representatives of unaffiliated lawmakers will have two minutes each to address the meeting.

Representatives of the Romanian government and heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Bucharest (EU states, NATO, Israel, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova) will be invited to attend the solemn meeting marking the Day of Solidarity and Friendship between Romania and the State of Israel.

In the memo sent to the joint Standing Bureaus of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, deputy Silviu Vexler emphasizes that the State of Israel “is one of Romania’s key partners both in the Middle East and worldwide, a permanent supporter of Romania and its people, having made major contributions that have materialized in numerous areas of national interest. Romania and the State of Israel have privileged relations with a strategic character, built on fundamental historical, political, cultural and moral ties.”

According to Vexler, “the joint solemn session will be an excellent opportunity to reiterate and develop the strong relationship of friendship between the two countries, will reaffirm the special and dynamic character of the Partnership between Romania and the State of Israel, also highlighting the essential contribution of the Romanian Parliament to the consolidation of these key relations for our country.”
