Jerusalem, 2 February, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Train service between Ashkelon and Sderot resumed on Sunday for the first time since the October 7 attacks nearly 16 ago.

With Defense Ministry approval, trains are now run between 5 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday.

Security measures were reinforced to ensure the train line’s safe operation. The Israel Defense Forces has deployed surveillance systems and boosted physical defenses to protect the line.

Hamas rocket fire during the October 7 attacks damaged the Sderot train station, forcing its closure for 10 months. When the station reopened in March 2024, it only operated trains running southward to Beer-Sheva via Ofakim.

At least 50 civilians and 20 police officers were killed defending Sderot during the October 7 attack.
