Sofia Closes Roads to Popular Mountain Site Due to Hurricane-Force Winds

Jerusalem, 4 January, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Sofia (BTA)- The Sofia Municipality announced on Sunday, it was temporarily closing the two main roads leading to the popular Vitosha Mountain in the directions of Aleko and Zlatnite Mostove, io ensure public safety due to exceptionally strong wind gusts.

The municipality urgeddtourists to exercise extreme caution, to refrain from traveling to Vitosha, and to strictly comply with restrictions and the instructions of authorities.

According to information from mountain hut operators on Vitosha, there is currently not a large number of tourists in the area. Conditions remain severe, with hurricane-force winds and strong gusts. Approximately 50 vehicles with tourists are currently located on the mountain in total.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) announced a yellow code for strong winds for today in 16 regions of the country. Wind gusts are expected to reach 90 km/h. The warning code is in effect for the regions of Burgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Vratsa, Gabrovo, Dobrich, Kardzhali, Lovech, Montana, Sofia City, Sofia Region, Targovishte, Haskovo, Shumen, Yambol.
