Tel Aviv Blast Confirmed as Terror Attack
Jerusalem, 19 August, 2024 (TPS) -- Israeli security officials confirmed on Monday morning that Sunday night’s explosion in Tel Aviv was a terror attack and not criminal.
“It can be said that this is a terror attack,” the Israeli Police and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) announced.
Security cameras filmed a man wearing a blue backpack walking down Lehi Road in southern Tel Aviv when it exploded not far from a synagogue.
The blast killed the suspect, identified only as a man in his 50s. Another man in his 30s was moderately injured.
The police and Shin Bet did not offer new information about the identity of the suspect. Israeli media, citing security sources, reported that the suspect is most likely a Palestinian.
Officials did not indicate what the target of the bombing might have been, or whether the explosive prematurely detonated.
Noting the proximity of the synagogue, which may have been the target, Police spokesman Eli Levy said, “A great miracle happened here, a few more meters and we would have woken up to a huge disaster.”
