Jerusalem, 30 April, 2024 (TPS) -- The man killed while trying to stab an Israeli police officer in Jerusalem on Tuesday was identified as a Turkish national, the police said.

Authorities said 34-year-old Hassan Saklanan had entered Israel from Jordan at the Allenby Bridge border crossing on Monday.

The injured officer, in his 30s, was evacuated to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Centre conscious and in moderate condition with stab wounds in the upper part of his body.

“We saw a 30-year-old man sitting while fully conscious and suffering from a stab wound in his upper body. We gave him medical treatment and he was taken to the hospital in moderate condition,” said Magen David Adom emergency medic Benny Libeskind.

Separately, Israeli security forces are searching for the driver of a vehicle who tried to run over a Border Police officer at a checkpoint.

The attack took place at a checkpoint near the Israel-Arab village of Barta’a, south of Haifa. The officer was conducting a routine inspection when another car tried to run him over. Officers fired at the vehicle, which fled off in the direction of the Palestinian Authority. A manhunt has been launched.

The officer was not injured.
