Three Patients Receive Heart and Kidneys from Single Donor

Jerusalem, 3 January, 2024 (TPS) -- SOFIA (BTA) The heart and the kidneys of a single deceased donor were transplanted to three Bulgarian patients in Sofia on January 2, the Executive Agency for Medical Supervision (EAMS) reported. The donor situation arose on December 31 and was handled by a medical team of the St Anne Hospital.

The heart was transplanted to a 37-year-old man at the St Ekaterina Hospital, and the kidneys were received by two women at the Lozenets Hospital. The recipients are in stable condition and remain under medical supervision in the intensive care units of the respective hospitals.

The Ministry of Health and the EAMS offered condolences to the donor’s family and thanked them for saving human lives. They also thanked the medical teams engaged in the transplantation process.

In 2023 twenty-two organ donor situations occurred in Bulgaria.
