Traffic Police Starts Putting Green License Plates on Electric Vehicles

Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Bulgaria will have green license plates. On Thursday, the traffic police started putting on the new plates in Sofia and will do so in the rest of the country starting next week. EVs that have already been registered will not be required to get the new plates.

Each EV owner can apply for the green license plate. The goal is for such vehicles to be recognizable, but changing the plates is not required, Branimir Andonov of the Traffic Police explained.

People wishing to get the green license plates will also be able to order special combinations of letters and numbers at the same price as regular license plates.

Unlike the current license plates, which start with a letter or a combination of letters denoting the regional city in which the vehicle is registered, the new green plates will all start with EA.

A total of 8,435 electric vehicles are registered in Bulgaria and there were close to 1,300 new registrations since the start of this year.
