Trump’s Gaza Plan ‘Difficult But Not Unrealistic,’ Says Former Israeli Diplomat
Jerusalem, 5 February, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- (Adnkronos) – Transforming Gaza into the Riviera of the Middle East? “It’s a completely new idea, very difficult to implement, but not unrealistic.” This is what former Israeli ambassador to Italy, Avi Pazner, told Adnkronos, commenting on the controversial proposal launched by US President Donald Trump during a joint press conference in Washington with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“It seems like something very difficult to do, very difficult,” believes Pazner, according to whom Trump’s plan is “completely new” and demonstrates the American president’s willingness to tackle “a problem that has been unsolved for 75 years”.
For the former ambassador to Italy, what Trump launched is not a joke. “It is not something he said on the spur of the moment, it is a plan that we do not know if it will be possible to advance, but it is certain that in the White House there is a friend of Israel and that he wants to strengthen it”, continues Pazner, who speaks of “a totally new way of thinking, which demonstrates a very great support for Israel by Washington.”
According to the former Israeli ambassador, the American president’s idea “surprised” everyone in the Jewish state, where “there are people who think it is a possible solution, others think it cannot be done, while there is still no official reaction from the government. Not even Netanyahu, who is in Washington, has commented.”
Regarding the reactions of Arab countries, all united for the moment in condemning Trump’s plan for Gaza, Pazner suggests that these positions – in his opinion – could change.
“We need to study and see the reactions of Arab countries that for the moment are negative,” he explains, recalling that next week King Abdullah II of Jordan is expected at the White House, one of the countries where Trump would like to transfer part of the Palestinians from Gaza. “I don’t know if this proposal will be accompanied by major American aid to Jordan to realize this project,” he concludes.
