Young Bulgarian Mathematicians Bring Home 37 Medals From Global Competition

Jerusalem, 21 July, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Chiba, Japan (BTA) – A team of 37 Bulgarian pupils took part in the finals of the World Mathematics Invitational in Chiba, Japan, held from July 10 to 14, winning a total of 37 medals, the Bulgarian Embassy in Japan said on Facebook.

The Bulgarian students brought home ten gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze medals. They also won three additional bronze awards in the Mini Math Creative Competition, where participants present mathematics through creative approaches such as art, music and sports.

The Bulgarian team also received three Merit awards, while special The STAR of WORLD prizes were presented to students with the highest scores from each participating country.

The award-winning students came from several Bulgarian cities, including Kazanlak, Stara Zagora, Ruse, Varna and Sofia.

Following the competition, ninth-grader Kaloyan Geshev, who holds a world record in mental arithmetic, was invited to take part in a joint demonstration with Japanese pupils at a speed calculation school in Tokyo on July 16. The event provided an opportunity for cultural exchange and interaction between Bulgarian and Japanese pupils, the Embassy added.
