Fires blaze in Gaza Belt, aerial arson attacks suspected

Three fires broke out in the Gaza Belt region Monday afternoon following suspected arson balloon attacks launched from the Gaza Strip. If confirmed, the attacks would be the first in several days. Earlier Monday, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman instructed the IDF toreopen the Erez Crossing in view of the relative calm in the region.

 

 

Netanyahu: ‘In next election, 40 Knesset seats is the objective’

The Likud’s objective for the next general elections is to win 40 out of 120 Knesset seats, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said at a party convention on Monday.

“I don’t know exactly when the general elections will take place, but I’m telling you that 35 is a likely number, and 40 is the objective,” said Netanyahu, ”We’re aiming there, and with God’s help, and with your help, the Likud will grow,” he added.

Elections are scheduled for November 5, 2019.

 

Liberman okays reopening of Erez Crossing

The Erez Crossing with Gaza is to be reopened Monday following several days of quiet. Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman made the decision following consultations with the IDF, Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and the National Security Council. The crossing was closed August 19 following violent riots in which two Palestinians were killed.

West Nile Virus Outbreak Reported

The Israeli Health Ministry announced Thursday, that 68 cases of the West Nile Virus have been reported recently, including 14 cases with severe symptoms, and two cases that resulted in death.

The Health Ministry stressed the the vast majority of cases are senior citizens with background diseases, including one of the two fatalities.

 

Report: Liberman Met Qatari FM For Talks On Gaza

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman met with the Qatari Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in Cyprus in June to discuss possible plans to rehabilitate to Gaza Strip, Walla News reported Wednesday.

The meeting was kept secret until now. Last week, Channel 10 News reported that Liberman travelled to Cyprus in order to meet with Qatar’s mediator to Gaza, Muhammad al-Amadi, however pointing out that al-Amadi frequently travels to Israel, and that Liberman’s trip to Cyprus was most likely in order to meet with someone much higher up. According to reports, Qatar is set to be instrumental in the rehabilitation of Gaza, offering to partially finance the efforts and establish sea and airports in Cyprus to be used for Gaza.
