Technion and Hebrew University among world’s leading universities

Shanghai Ranking’s 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities has placed Israel’s Technion 77th among the world’s 100 leading universities, as well as the Hebrew University in Jerusalem at 95th place. In last year’s ranking, the Technion was placed at 93, with Hebrew University not placing in the top 100. The world’s top ranking university for both years is Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Kerem Shalom crossing to be opened tomorrow morning

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman conducted a security assessment with members of the defense forces on Tuesday afternoon, at the end of which he order that, should the Gaza front remain calm until tomorrow morning, the Kerem Shalom border crossing will be reopened, as well as the fishing parameter be returned to nine miles from the shore.

Pipe bombs thrown at Rachel’s Tomb

Border Police officers located two pipe bombs thrown in the vicinity of Rachel’s Tomb at the northern entrance to Bethlehem early Tuesday afternoon. The pipe bombs, thrown from the Palestinian side of the security fence at the spot, failed to explode. A police sapper neutralized the devices.

Philippine President Duterte confirms Israel visit next month

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will visit Israel from September 2 to 5, Presidential spokesman Harry Roque confirmed Monday. Duterte is expected to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and witness the signing of several cooperation agreements. “The President and Prime Minister Netanyahu are expected to discuss common concerns and ways of expanding cooperation in the areas of labor, tourism, trade, agriculture, counterterrorism, and security and law enforcement,” Roque said.  Duterte will also meet with members of the Filipino community in Israel.The visit will be the first by a Philippine leader to Israel since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries in 1957. Roque said Duterte would also travel to Jordan.

Report: PM held secret meeting with Egyptian President el-Sisi

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu recently met in secret with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi to discuss a possible long-term arrangement for the Gaza Strip, according to an unconfirmed report on Channel 10 News. According to the report Monday, Netanyahu met on May 22, with the Egyptian president in Cairo  where the two discussed reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah, easing of restrictions on the Gaza Strip and the return of the remains of Israeli soldiers held by Hamas in the framework of a long-term ceasefire agreement. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to confirm the report. Netanyahu and Sisi met in public in Cairo in September 2017.
