‘I Felt Fear, but Preferred to Make Contact’: Troops Recount Clash with Armed Terrorist in Jerusalem

22 December, 2020   |   5 years ago

Border Policemen stationed in Jerusalem’s Old City on Monday tracked down and killed an armed Arab terrorist who had shot at policemen stationed at the entrance to the Temple Mount.

The terrorist, clad in black and armed with a Carlo submachine gun, was killed in a gunfight with the troops.

One policeman was lightly injured from a fall during the chase.

“I felt feelings of fear and risk, but the main feeling was dedication, striving to make contact [with the terrorist] and knowing that I would rather be hurt than my comrade,” said a Border Patrol fighter, after he and his teammates neutralized the terrorist.

The attack in Jerusalem occurred hours after Esther Horgan, a 52-year-old mother of six from Tal Menashe in Samaria, was found dead after being murdered by a terrorist.

A “significant development” has been reported on the investigation, but a gag order has been placed on details of the hunt for the terrorist.

Another two Members of Knesset (MK) tested positive for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) as the number of new cases in Israel continues to climb.

MK Hila Vazan announced Monday morning that she tested positive for the virus.

MK Yaacov Asher was tested positive on Sunday.

Both are in good condition.

MK David Bitan, who tested positive two weeks ago and who was admitted to the intensive care unit at Sheba Tel Hashomer Hospital last Saturday after feeling unwell and suffering from difficulty breathing, is still in serious condition.

His family stated Sunday that on the recommendation of the medical staff, he continues to be connected to an Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation device and “is communicating with his surroundings.”

Several ministers and MKs have contracted the virus, but none have been hospitalized.

The Ministry of Health updated Monday morning that it recorded 2,821 new cases in the past 24 hours.

Of the 70,575 tests done Tuesday, a climbing 4.1% returned positive.

According to the Ministry of Health’s data, 456 patients are hospitalized in serious condition, of whom 117 are on life support.

3,101 Israelis have died of the virus since the outbreak in February.

Chairman of the US Joint Staff General Mark Milley concluded a two-day trip to Israel on Friday, during which he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the IDF’s top brass.

This is the general’s third visit to Israel since taking office.

Milley participated in a number of military meetings and events “aimed at strengthening the partnership and cooperation between the IDF and the US military,” the IDF stated.

A panel of IDF commanders was held presented a strategic review and an intelligence review that dealt with the regional security challenges in the Middle East as well as issues in the sphere of power building.

Milley toured the IDF’s Ground Forces’ Multi-Domain Strike Unit, a new elite and innovative combat unit.

IDF Chief of the General Staff LTG Aviv Kochavi hosted Chairman of the US Joint Staff General Mark Milley and US Staff Sgt. Jarelle Turner, an MFO peacekeeper who survived the deadly helicopter crash in November and who was treated by Israel, for a candle lighting ceremony on the 8th and final night of Hanukkah.

Members of 669 Tactical Unit for Special Rescues who were partners in evacuating Turner for medical treatment in a hospital in Israel were at the event.

“The close relationship between the IDF and the US military is of paramount importance at the strategic level and is reflected in operational and technological cooperation that strengthens the IDF in the Middle East every day,” stated Kochavi.

Milley stated he was “proud to be with our great friend and ally, the modern Maccabees of the State of Israel. And I take special pride to be here on the last night of Hanukkah when the light of the menorah burns most bright.”

He also met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday and the two discussed “regional threats, especially the Iranian aggression.”

They also discussed cooperation between the IDF and the US Armed Forces, and “opportunities in the region.”

Netanyahu thanked Milley for “the cooperation that has expanded and deepened in recent years under the Trump administration and expressed his willingness to continue deepening the cooperation.”

Justice Minister Signs Extradition Order for Alleged Offender Malka Leifer

17 December, 2020   |   5 years ago

Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn signed on Wednesday an order extraditing accused sex-offender Malka Leifer back to Australia.

The High Court of Justice ruled Tuesday that Leifer can be extradited to Australia to stand trial. This ruling was the last in years of court proceedings in which Leifer’s legal team asserted that she was mentally unfit.

A psychiatric panel in January decided that the alleged sex offender, who escaped to Israel from Australia, is mentally fit to stand trial and has been feigning mental illness.

“After many years, after a despicable attempt to impersonate some suffering from mental illness and in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling, it is our moral duty to allow Leifer to be tried,” said Nissenkorn.

Leifer will leave for Australia in the coming 60 days.

Leifer, a former Ultra-Orthodox girls’ school principal, is charged in Australia with dozens of cases of child abuse. She fled to Israel in 2008 following allegations that she had sexually abused students at the Adass Yisroel school in Melbourne on 74 different occasions.

Israel Gets New Police of Chief

16 December, 2020   |   5 years ago

After many months in which Israel had no permanent chief of police, Minister of Internal Security Amir Ohana announced Tuesday that he has decided to recommend to the Government the appointment of Border Police Commander Yaakov (Kobi) Shabtai to the position of Inspector General of the Israel Police.

Ohana made his decision after meeting in recent months with senior officers serving in the Israel Police and with a number of retired officers.

Shabtai is a decorated officer and is considered an enterprising leader with rich experience. Under his command, the Border Police became the most sought-after corps for service among young men and women in Israel, before all IDF units, in an unprecedented manner.

“All of the above combined with his vision for the Israel Police and his character traits led me to the conclusion that he is the right person to lead the police and strengthen the public’s trust in it,” stated Ohana.

Acting Inspector General Moti Cohen announced he would retire from the police.

In related news, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on Tuesday to appoint Deputy Mossad Director “D” as the next Mossad Director.

“D” is an accomplished Mossad veteran. The appointment is currently in the Goldberg Committee, the Senior Civil Service Appointment Advisory Committee, chaired by former Supreme Court Justice Eliezer Goldberg.

“D” identity will be exposed if he is cleared for the position.
