Jerusalem, 18 March, 2024 (TPS) -- The Israeli Cabinet on Sunday approved the observance of a national day of remembrance to commemorate Hamas’s October 7 attacks and the ensuing Gaza war, to be held annually on the 24th day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei.

This year, the 24th of Tishrei falls on Shabbat, so commemorations will instead be held on October 7, the anniversary on the Gregorian calendar.

At least 1,200 people were killed and 240 Israelis and foreigners were taken hostage in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7. Of the remaining 134 hostages, Israel recently declared 31 of them dead.
