A 19-year-old pedestrian was killed by the light rail tram on Tuesday night on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem.

The young woman, identified as Tamar Fenigstein of Petha Tikva, was trapped under the train and firefights were called to rescue her body. They used special equipment to extract her from under the train.

An initial investigation shows that Fenigstein suffered from a medical-related incident before falling on to the tracks and suffering the fatal accident.

Four of her friends who witnessed the fatal accident suffered from shock and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The light rail system has previously had several accidents, mostly with cars, but the outcome was rarely fatal.

Six Israelis have been killed in road accidents since the beginning of the week, and 316 have died on the roads since the beginning of the year, compared to 289 in 2018.
