Cave of the Patriarchs to Get Wheelchair Access
Jerusalem, 2 July, 2018 (TPS-IL) -- The Justice Ministry has instructed the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) to modify the approaches to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron to accommodate wheelchairs.
In a letter to COGAT officials, the Ministry’s Commission for Equal Rights of Persons With Disabilities said it had received “several complaints” in recent months from individuals with physical handicaps who were prevented from entering the holy site because of the large number of steps leading to the building.
“We are well aware of the complicated situation at the site,” the Commission wrote. “At the same time, we ask you to take action to make the site handicap-accessible.”
The Herodian structure, which dates to the Second Temple Era, is considered holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians due to the traditional belief that the Biblical forefathers – Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca and Jacob and Leah are buried at the site.
