Jerusalem, 22 August, 2016 (TPS) -- The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said on Monday evening that a Syrian mortar had landed in Israel and hit an open area near the border fence in the central Golan Heights. It said that it caused no casualties and no damage. In response, an IDF plane launched an airstrike against a missile launcher belonging to the Syrian army.

“The IDF holds the Syrian regime responsible for what happens in its territory and will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israel’s sovereignty and the security of its citizens,” declared the IDF in a statement.

The incident was apparently a misfire from internal battles within Syria in its ongoing civil war. No alarm was sounded in Israel due to the mortar having fallen in an open space.
