Jerusalem, 3 February, 2021 (TPS-IL) -- Israel is following the situation in Myanmar “with concern,” and calls for the release of the head of state, Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as of the leaders and public figures who have been arrested, Israel’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lior Haiat stated Tuesday.

Myanmar’s military seized control of the country after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize Laurite, and other democratically elected leaders.

The army claims that it carried out the coup because the recent landslide election win by Suu Kyi’s party was the outcome of fraud.

“Israel continues to support the people of Myanmar and the process of democratization, and calls for the preservation of peace, quiet and rule of law in the country and for the prevention of violence,” said Haiat.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with the Israeli embassy in Yangon. The embassy staff and their families are well, as are Israeli citizens in Myanmar,” he noted.
