Jerusalem, 15 May, 2016 (TPS) -- Media outlets in the Gaza Strip are reporting that thousands of demonstrators have gathered near the fence separating Israel from Gaza to mark the Nakba Day.

The annual Nakba Day (literally “Day of the Catastrophe”) is marked by the Palestinians on the 15th of May, one day after the anniversary of Israel’s declaration of independence. Events and demonstrations are held on Nakba Day to commemorate the displacement of an estimated 700,000 Arabs who fled or were expelled during the War of Independence in 1948, which was started by four neighboring Arab armies after the Partition Plan was rejected by the Arabs and the State of Israel was founded.
