Jerusalem, 22 September, 2021 (TPS) -- An Israeli policeman was killed in the northern city of Nahariya on Tuesday when he was run over, apparently by a fleeing criminal.

Hussam Sajier, 32, of the Druze community and a resident of Yarka, a volunteer policeman, was called with other police officers to address a suspicion of illegals hiding at a construction site in Nahariya.

During the police team’s inspection of the workers’ permits at the site, a vehicle arrived at the scene and a dispute ensued between the police and the driver, who then escaped and ran over a police officer and the volunteer.

Amir Abu Reish, a policeman, was seriously injured. Sajier died of his wounds.

Large police forces were called to the scene and began extensive searches for suspects and arrested the suspected perpetrator, a 44-year-old resident of Araba, for questioning.

Terrorism was ruled out.

Another 11 workers, residents of the village of Yatta near Hebron, were arrested in connection with the incident.

District Commander Yoram Sofer stated that “an incident in which police officers are harmed while performing their duties is extremely serious. The investigation is ongoing.”
