Jerusalem, 8 August, 2018 (TPS) -- More than 1,000 women enlisted to IDF combat units during the summer recruitment, Army Radio reported Wednesday. That number has nearly doubled since 2012 when just 547 women served in combat roles.

Although by law women are required to perform two years of military service, women choosing to enlist in combat units are required to agree to sign on for an additional eight months, to match the legal requirement for men.

The IDF Spokesman’s Unit released the numbers a day after Air Force Commander Gen. Amikam Nurkiin nominated Major G. to command the 122nd air wing, known as Nachshon. G., 34, will become the first woman in that role.
